DEVON’s largest private waste management company has recruited two top corporate dealmakers as it prepares for further expansion.

Former Ernst and Young director Stuart Crebo and Bond Pearce corporate partner Steve Hadley are joining the board of Devon Waste Management Ltd (DWM) in what is a coup for the company. Steve becomes commercial director and Stuart a non-executive director.
DWM is a leader in the field of non-hazardous waste recovery, re-use and recycling, handling more waste than any other provider in Devon through its contracts with both private and local government clients. It was the waste management division of Devon County Council until it became a commercial business in 2003. It now has an annual turnover of £17 million.

The two, who have played prominent roles as advisers on many South West and national corporate transactions, advised the DWM team on the buyout in 2003. They will now play a pivotal role in helping the group to expand in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Welcoming the pair to the board, managing director Collin Hickling said: “I am delighted to welcome both Steve and Stuart to Devon Waste Management. “Their individual skills, experience and professionalism are well known in the South West business community and I know that their contribution to the on-going development of our business will be a significant step to our further expansion and development.”

Allan Vodden, DWM’s chairman, said: “The business operates in the high profile sectors of waste management and recycling, which continue to evolve and present fresh challenges. Steve and Stuart both come from highly successful professional careers. Their vision and background experience will enhance the ability of the board to evolve its own growth strategy and evaluate the opportunities."

Stuart Crebo was formerly head of the Ernst and Young corporate finance team in Exeter and advised on many of the major transactions in the South West between 1996 and 2009, which included the buyout of DWM from Devon County Council.
Steve Hadley is a South West-based corporate partner at national law firm Bond Pearce and has developed specialist experience and knowledge in the waste sector. He has provided corporate legal advice to DWM for 10 years.

Steve said: “Devon Waste Management has an excellent management team who have ensured significant growth over the past decade and I am delighted to be joining them.
“The waste market is evolving quickly, with an increasing emphasis on delivering complete environmental and waste solutions that have a strong bias towards recycling and renewable energy. “We will continue to work with our clients to keep pace with their needs and provide them with an excellent service and environmental compliance. The group operates 24 recycling centres and achieves a stunning commercial waste recycling rate of over 90 percent.

“The skills that Stuart and I bring to board will also ensure the firm retains its leading role in waste management and recycling, identifying and developing the potential growth opportunities from new technologies, strategic partnerships and acquisitions.”
Stuart said: “Having worked with Collin, Allan and Steve on the original buyout of Devon Waste Management from Devon County Council, it was an opportunity not to be missed when Collin approached me to join the board.

“The waste industry has a many challenges in the future, which will give rise to new opportunities. Being part of the DWM team during this next stage of its development will, I am sure, prove to be both stimulating and rewarding.”

DWM operates under two brands. Devon Waste Management manages public sector contracts while Coastal Waste provides waste management solutions to a growing portfolio of business and residential clients. In three years, Coastal Waste has increased turnover 100 percent.

The group has a staff of 100 and operates two landfill sites at Torrington and Kennford, 24 civic recycling centres throughout Devon and three transfer stations at Exeter, Crediton and Tavistock.
